The town of Julia Creek, with a population of about 550 in Queensland, Australia, posted an eye‑catching job advertisement to find a permanent doctor. The ad, which offers a high salary as well as free accommodation and a vehicle, attracted attention for its terms.

Salary Reaches Up to 680,000 Australian Dollars

In the March 2025 advertisement, a salary of up to 680,000 Australian dollars per year was offered for the senior health officer and family physician positions. That figure equated to roughly 428,000 US dollars at the exchange rate during the posting period.

The package prepared to meet the town's need for a doctor includes more than just a high salary. The incoming health worker will also receive free accommodation and a vehicle or a vehicle allowance.

It also states that the doctor can benefit from additional leave for professional development.

Will Be the Town's Only Permanent Doctor

One of the main reasons the offer is so high is Julia Creek's remote location. The doctor appointed to the post is expected to be the town's sole permanent physician, working alongside the clinic's health team.

In a town of about 550 residents, access to healthcare is also quite limited. The nearest doctor is roughly 90 minutes away, and reaching more comprehensive hospital services takes hours, heightening the responsibilities of the resident physician.

Must Handle a Wide Range of Cases

Because of the distance, the doctor serving in Julia Creek is not expected to be limited to routine examinations. The physician who will largely meet the town's health needs must deal with various types of cases and, when necessary, arrange referrals to larger medical centers.

Despite all these advantages, the town's difficulty in finding a permanent doctor once again highlights how severe the shortage of healthcare workers can be in remote areas.
