The 60‑year‑old Ken Nurse, who visited Glacier National Park in Montana, USA, fell from about 36 meters into the river when the ground collapsed as he advanced to get a better view of the waterfall. The tourist, whose breath was stopped, clung to life thanks to the intervention of a nearby person and the swift work of the teams.

Ken Nurse, born in Montana and living in North Carolina, went to Glacier National Park with his wife Renae and family last Thursday. While photographing McDonald Falls, Nurse moved toward the gorge to see the water up close.

However, when the ground he stepped on suddenly collapsed, Nurse lost his balance and fell about 36 meters into the river below.

During the incident, U.S. Navy electrician Josh Seppelt, who was nearby, rushed to help upon hearing the sound of the fall. Seppelt reached the river after his daughter shouted, 'Dad, there's someone in the water.'

Seppelt, holding Nurse by the leg and pulling him into the shallows, noticed the unlucky man was not breathing. He then began CPR. A nearby park ranger also requested assistance from search‑and‑rescue teams via radio.

He Remained on a Ventilator for Two Days

While her husband was falling, Renae Nurse, who was in the vehicle, said she felt great panic when she learned that CPR was being performed on her upon arrival at the scene.

Renae, who said her profession is nursing, said she immediately understood how serious the situation was.

Ken Nurse, stabilized on site by search and rescue teams, was airlifted to the hospital. It was announced that during the two days he remained on a ventilator, multiple ribs were broken, an open fracture occurred in his elbow, and fluid had accumulated in his lungs.

Removed from Intensive Care

It was reported that several more surgeries were performed before Nurse, who was taken off intensive care on Sunday. Despite what he experienced, Nurse said his condition was good and he considered his survival a 'miracle'.

"Considering the conditions, I am quite well. I take a step each time, but I should not have been here. I will do everything I can to earn this chance given to me," he said.

He jumped into the water with courage and saved his life.

Renae Nurse, expressing her gratitude to Josh Seppelt, who saved her husband's life, said, "He jumped into the water with courage and saved Ken's life."

Renae, who said that the beauty of Glacier National Park took her breath away, added after the incident, "This time it really took my husband's breath away, but they brought it back to him."

Renae, who said that it was a great joy that her husband could return home with her, said, "I can't imagine a life without him."
