A hamburger order changed his life! He woke up in the hospital.
Roxie Ellis Douglas, who lives in Chicago, USA, claimed that she suffered a severe infection after ordering a meal from Wendy's and was taken to the hospital. Facing treatment costs exceeding $90,000, Douglas sued the fast‑food chain.

In the United States, 68‑year‑old Roxie Ellis Douglas, who fell ill after ordering from the fast‑food chain Wendy’s, was hospitalized twice. Tests revealed that Douglas was infected with the Campylobacter bacterium, and after treatment he faced a medical bill of $93,578.
Hospitalized After Eating
On August 5, Douglas ordered a double‑patty cheeseburger and baked potatoes from a Wendy’s restaurant on Stony Island Boulevard in Chicago.
According to reports, the woman was hospitalized shortly after experiencing severe discomfort following the meal. Medical examinations determined that Douglas had contracted an infection caused by the Campylobacter bacterium.
The woman, who was hospitalized twice, was diagnosed with acute infectious colitis, leukocytosis, and potassium deficiency due to excessive fluid loss.
Treatment Cost Exceeded $93,000
After the treatment process, a medical expense bill of $93,578 was issued to Douglas. In response, the woman filed a lawsuit against Wendy’s through her attorneys.
Douglas alleged that the restaurant violated rules governing the safe storage, preparation, and processing of food. The woman, who claimed the food she ordered was contaminated with dangerous pathogens, demanded more than $75,000 in damages.
Campylobacter Warning
According to World Health Organization data, Campylobacter is among the most common bacterial causes of stomach and intestinal infections in humans. It is noted that the infection can lead to more severe outcomes in elderly people, infants, and those with weakened immune systems.
Wendy’s Wants to Move the Lawsuit to Federal Court
Wendy’s, headquartered in Ohio, argued that the case should be heard in federal court. The company cited the amount of damages sought and the fact that the lawsuit involves multiple states as grounds for transferring the trial to federal jurisdiction.
Wendy’s officials have not yet issued an official statement about the incident. The legal proceedings related to the lawsuit are expected to unfold in the coming days.
