Peru was added to the series of earthquakes that have been occurring one after another in South America. According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck approximately 38 kilometres northwest of the city of Upahuacho in Peru.
The quake was reported to have occurred around 21:00 local time and at a depth of about 66.7 kilometres.
The tremor triggered brief panic.
While the strong shaking was felt in surrounding areas, a brief panic followed the earthquake. Residents in the region moved to open spaces as a precaution.
No official statement has yet been issued regarding casualties or material damage after the quake. Officials were said to be continuing assessments of potential damage in the area.
