The TPS decision that drew 170,000 migrants changed at the last minute
The expected termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which concerns roughly 170,000 El Salvador nationals in the United States, has not yet been applied. The Department of Homeland Security announced that, pending a new statement, current TPS holders’ protection and work authorizations will continue. At this stage, there is no official clarification on whether the decision will affect migrants from other countries within the TPS framework.
The expiration of TPS for citizens of El Salvador was expected on September 9. However, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that existing TPS holders would remain protected until a final decision on the program’s future is announced.
The decision means that roughly 170,000 people will not face the risk of deportation for the time being and can continue to use their work permits.
However, this decision does not constitute a permanent extension. DHS said that the announcement regarding the future of El Salvadoran TPS status would be made at an "appropriate time".
Immigrants are experiencing uncertainty.
TPS for El Salvadorans had been extended at various times since December 2000. USC Gould School of Law Professor Jean Reisz noted that TPS alone does not grant permanent residency or citizenship.
Immigration advocates point out that the termination of TPS could create labor shortages in construction, restaurants, landscaping and other sectors.
Among the states where TPS holders of Salvadoran origin live most densely are Maryland, Virginia, California, Texas, and New York. A significant number of TPS holders also live in North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Georgia.
For now, how long the status of the protected immigrants will last will be clarified with a new statement from DHS.
