U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll tendered his resignation to President Donald Trump. Driscoll's departure came after months of ongoing disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The White House confirmed Driscoll's resignation but did not provide a detailed explanation of the reasons for the split. Sources close to the matter who spoke to Reuters said that Driscoll and Hegseth had disagreements, particularly over the transformation of the Army and its war‑readiness capacity.

Allegation of tension with Hegseth

The U.S. press had previously reported that Driscoll's relationship with Defense Secretary Hegseth had become strained in recent months.

According to information reported by Reuters, Driscoll raised some concerns about the Army's transformation and readiness level within the administration. It was also reported that Hegseth's disputes with senior military leaders had heightened the tension between the two men.

One of the key points of the tension was Hegseth's removal of Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Randy George in April. It was reported that Driscoll had worked closely with George and that the move made the disagreements between the two men more visible.

Trump accepted the resignation

In the initial statements, it was unclear whether the White House had accepted the resignation. Later, a U.S. official announced that President Trump had accepted Driscoll's resignation. Driscoll is expected to step down in the coming days.

Driscoll had been serving as Secretary of the Army since February 2025. During his tenure, he played a role in modernizing the Army, raising its readiness level, and developing capacity against new warfare technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles.

Praise from the White House

White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly evaluated Driscoll's tenure in positive terms. Kelly said that Driscoll had led during historic military operations, focused on the army's readiness and striking power capacity, and played a role in Russia‑Ukraine negotiations.

Driscoll's resignation was a new development in the recent changes in U.S. military leadership under the Trump administration. In particular, the departure or removal of senior figures in the Army brought the Pentagon's leadership changes back into focus.

No official statement has yet been made about who will be appointed to the position of Secretary of the Land Forces following Driscoll's resignation.
