You’ll be in hot water if you miss Trash Day in the United States!
Gizem Atak, who lives in the United States, explained the trash system that people leaving Turkey are not accustomed to. The consequence of missing the truck that comes only once a week was surprising.

Turkish content creator living in ABDGizem AtakShe attracted attention with a post explaining the trash collection system in her area. Atak, who said she is used to trash being collected much more frequently in Turkey, said that in ABD her own region's trash trucks come only once a week.
Trash Stays in Boxes for a Week
Gizem Atak, who shares posts about daily life in America from her social media account, this time showed her followers the trash system used in her neighborhood.
Atak said, 'If I tell you that trash in America waits for a week… Yes, you heard it right. We collect our trash for a full week,' explaining that the system initially surprised her quite a bit.

According to the post, every house in the area has its own trash cans. Waste generated in the houses is accumulated in these cans throughout the week. When the designated trash‑collection day arrives, the cans are taken out to the roadside in front of the houses.
Missing that day means waiting another week.
Garbage trucks empty the cans left on the roadside as they pass the street using mechanical systems. However, according to Atak, trash collection in the street where he lives takes place only once a week.

For that reason, missing the trash day has a significant consequence. Atak said, "If you miss that day, you will have to wait until the next week," indicating that the trash could stay in the house’s bin for another week.
There is a penalty for leaving the trash can outside.
Another notable aspect of the system is how long the trash cans can remain outside. According to Atak, the cans can be taken out to the roadside only on the designated trash day, and after collection they must be brought back to the area where the house is located.
Atak said that a penalty could be imposed on the grounds that leaving the bins in the neighborhood would spoil the appearance of the housing complex or the neighborhood.
Different Vehicles for Recycling Can Be Used
Atak also explained that not all waste is collected by the same vehicle. He said that different bins and collection vehicles can be used for regular household trash and recycling waste, and that collection days can vary by region.

Atak, who is accustomed to more frequent trash collection in Turkey, said that he found this practice quite interesting when he first arrived in the U.S., and he asked his followers, 'Which do you think is more reasonable? Collecting trash more often or once a week?'
Atak's post brought one of the differences in daily life habits between the U.S. and Turkey into the social media conversation.
Note:In the United States, the frequency of garbage collection is not uniform nationwide; it can vary by municipality, district, housing complex management, or private waste company. The system described in the post reflects the one in the area where Gizem Atak lives.
