According to information reported by local media, the fire engulfed roughly 61,000 acres. As the danger escalated, an “immediate evacuation” warning was issued for 42,000 residents. Residents in areas the blaze could reach were also urged to be ready to leave their homes. Thus, the number of people affected by the evacuation notice and readiness call reached 87,000.

At least six people were injured in the blaze, three civilians and three aid workers. Reports indicated that many buildings were also damaged.

The Reno–Sparks Convention Center was converted into a temporary shelter for residents forced to leave their homes. Some hotels in the city also began offering discounted lodging to those affected by the fire.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said the flames were advancing at an extraordinary speed and that constantly shifting winds were hampering firefighting efforts. Balaam, who noted that about 800 personnel had responded to the blaze, urged residents to “If you can, please leave the area immediately.”

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County. National Guard units were also deployed to support firefighting and evacuation efforts.

Officials said that sudden changes in wind direction had made it harder to predict the fire's progress, urging residents of the area to closely follow official evacuation notices.
