Average IQ rankings for U.S. states have been revealed.
According to 2026 data compiled by World Population Review, Massachusetts emerged as the state with the highest average IQ in the U.S., scoring 104.3 points. Mississippi, however, ranked at the bottom of the list.

Massachusetts was followed by New Hampshire (104.2), North Dakota (103.8), Vermont (103.8), and Minnesota (103.7).
The top ten also included Maine, Montana, Iowa, Connecticut, and Wisconsin.

Mississippi appeared at the bottom of the list.
The research found that the average IQ in the U.S. is considered to be 100, while it was noted that roughly 95 percent of the population’s IQ scores fall between 70 and 130.
Mississippi (94.2) ranked last, with Louisiana (95.3) in second place and California (95.5) third in terms of the lowest average IQ among states. California was followed by Hawaii, New Mexico, and Alabama.
The study recorded a gap of 10.1 points between the states with the highest and lowest average IQs.
