SAI alert for need-based federal scholarships in the U.S.: Pay attention to the FAFSA application!
In the U.S., the Student Aid Index (SAI) value is crucial for determining whether students who will attend university can benefit from need-based federal financial aid. This value, which must be checked after the FAFSA application, is used to evaluate a student's eligibility for scholarships and grants.

It is recommended that families in the United States seeking financial aid for university education check their children's Student Aid Index (SAI) – Student Aid Index value after completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
SAI stands out as one of the key indicators universities use when assessing students' financial aid needs. A low index may signal that the student could qualify for need-based aid.
What Does a Negative SAI Mean for the Pell Grant?
A negative SAI indicates that the student may have a high financial need. Students who meet federal eligibility requirements can qualify for a grant under the Federal Pell Grant program. Some students may also be eligible for the maximum grant amount.
However, a definitive scholarship entitlement cannot be determined solely by looking at the SAI value. The student must also meet other federal eligibility criteria and undergo the relevant financial aid assessment.
Can Be Checked from the FAFSA Account
Families must log into their accounts after completing the FAFSA application to check their children's SAI value. This value is important for understanding the financial aid options that can be provided for university education.
Prof. Yavuz also urged families in his briefing to log into their FAFSA accounts and check their SAI values.
