Inflationary pressure increased in the United States ahead of Memorial Day.
In the United States, ahead of Memorial Day, rising costs for gasoline, food, and travel increased pressure on consumer spending. Annual inflation rose to 3.8% in May, the highest level in two years.

Inflation has once again taken center stage as the United States prepares for Memorial Day, traditionally considered the start of the summer season.
Particularly, rising energy costs following the Iran conflict have accelerated price increases in transportation and essential consumer goods.
According to Federal data, consumer inflation rose to 3.8 percent year-on-year in April, marking the highest level since 2023.
Bank of America’s senior economist, Stephen Juneau, stated that price increases are directly impacting consumers’ daily spending.

Increases in fuel and food prices
AAA data indicates that approximately 45 million Americans are expected to travel during the Memorial Day period. More than 39 million of them are projected to use roadways.
The price of unleaded gasoline nationwide has risen more than 28 percent year-on-year, reaching its highest level in four years.
Price increases were also recorded in food. The prices of ground beef and steak rose as high as 16 percent year-on-year, while hot dog prices increased by approximately 11 percent.
Prices of tomatoes rose by around 40 percent, while coffee prices exceeded 18 percent year-on-year. Price increases were also seen in sweets, carbonated beverages, and sauces.

Travel costs are rising
Airline ticket prices have risen 20.7 percent compared to April 2025, reaching the highest level since 2022.
Airlines have announced that jet fuel costs have increased following tensions around the Strait of Hormuz in Iran. Hotel and accommodation prices have also risen 4.3 percent year-on-year.
Personal finance expert Kimberly Palmer noted that rising fuel costs are particularly straining the budgets of families planning long trips.
Consumers opting to stay home have also been affected by price hikes. Admissions to cinemas, theaters, and concerts rose by 5.5 percent over the past year, while bicycle and sports equipment prices surged by more than 4 percent, officials said.
Price increases in garden equipment, as well as flowers and plant products, were also reported to continue.
