According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Border Patrol teams detected an illegal border crossing in Highgate, Vermont, on June 20.

About 2.5 hours later, a Colombian citizen named Sidney Lauryn Parra Torres and a woman from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with four children, were found in a forested area. Later, Senegalese citizen Maimouna Diakhate was also apprehended in the same region.

A money transfer was detected.

As part of the investigation, a Toyota Prius linked to suspected human smuggling activities was stopped.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as a Turkish citizen, O.Y.

It was found that Parra Torres had sent money to O.Y. via Zelle. Following this, a federal case was filed against O.Y. on charges of attempting to transport an illegal immigrant.

Federal Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle ruled that Yılmaz could be released conditionally during the trial process.

A sentence of up to five years in prison is being sought.

The U.S. Department of Justice emphasized that the case has not yet been heard and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court.

It was noted that if O.Y. is found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The department also stated that in the past six weeks, 60 individuals linked to illegal crossings from the Canadian border have been processed, with suspects hailing from 20 different countries, including Türkiye.
