In a plane crash that occurred in the U.S. state of Alaska, 8 people lost their lives. The Cessna 441 aircraft that had taken off from Anchorage bound for Cape Newenham crashed in a region near its destination.
According to initial information shared by the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was heading toward Cape Newenham, located about 450 miles southwest of Anchorage. The charter flight operated by Security Aviation carried two pilots and six passengers.
Everyone on the aircraft lost their lives.
Alaskan Command announced that the aircraft was conducting a civilian contract flight and was carrying a total of eight people. Search and rescue teams dispatched to the area confirmed that all those aboard the aircraft lost their lives.
The aircraft was reported to have crashed near Cape Newenham Airport. The runway in question provides access to a long‑range radar facility known as the “Long Range Radar Site.”
Flights to the area are subject to special permits.
It was stated that only military aircraft and specially approved charter flights are allowed to land at the Cape Newenham facility. U.S. Air Force officials described the accident as a "devastating loss" and said that those who lost their lives were carrying out an important mission in a region with harsh conditions.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The reason the aircraft crashed is still unknown. It was announced that the investigation into the incident will be conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. The review will assess the aircraft's technical condition, weather, and flight records.
