The incident occurred at Difficult Run Park in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Police units were dispatched to the area after a report of a motionless woman found in a parking lot on Georgetown Pike at about 06:43 in the morning.
The lifeless body of 42‑year‑old Carmen Lizet Puch was found near a vehicle by a person who came for a morning run. It was determined that Puch died at the scene.
Security Cameras Revealed the Attack's Preceding Events
In the investigation launched after the murder, police located 19‑year‑old Alexis Antonio Cedillos‑Campos, who works at the same restaurant as Puch.
According to information relayed by Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, security cameras showed the suspect taking a large fixed‑blade knife, black latex gloves, and a water bottle from the restaurant where he worked before the murder.
Police said the suspect emptied the water bottle, then refilled it with gasoline siphoned from his motorcycle. They then reportedly went to Difficult Run Park with Puch.
Repeatedly Stabbed, Then Spilled Gasoline
According to police, Cedillos‑Campos repeatedly stabbed Puch in the park.
After the attack, it was alleged that the young man poured the gasoline he had brought onto the woman and tried to ignite it. However, authorities said his attempt to set the body on fire failed.
Police Chief Davis described the nature of the attack as "unacceptable", stressing that the murder was not a random assault.

They worked at the same restaurant.
Police said that Puch and Cedillos-Campos worked at the same restaurant and that they had a close relationship.
Authorities say the pair deliberately met in the park on the morning the murder was committed. However, the exact reason for the attack has not yet been released to the public.
It was reported that the detectives conducting the investigation are continuing their work to uncover the motive behind the murder.
Caught Within 48 Hours
The teams that launched a comprehensive investigation after the murder identified the suspect's identity within about 48 hours.
Cedillos-Campos was arrested in Maryland with the support of the U.S. Marshals Service and Prince George’s County police.
