Why are carpets so common in homes in America? Here are the surprising reasons
In the U.S., carpet use is especially widespread in bedrooms and staircases. Advantages such as thermal insulation, low cost, and sound isolation highlight the carpet, while disadvantages like cleaning, stains, and allergen buildup lead to a preference for hardwood and vinyl floors in new homes.

After moving to the U.S., social media user Aysun Coşkun, who drew attention to the prevalence of carpet use in homes, explained why carpets are frequently chosen especially in bedrooms and staircases. Coşkun noted that many factors, from thermal insulation to cost, from sound isolation to comfort, influence this choice.
Aysun Coşkun listed the reasons for the widespread use of carpets in homes in America in a post from her social media account.
Provides Thermal Insulation in Cold Weather
According to Coşkun, one of the carpet’s most important advantages is helping the home feel warmer by reducing the chill coming from the floor in cold weather.
Coşkun, who noted that carpet use is quite common in bedrooms and staircases, also pointed out that carpets can be more economical than hardwood and some other floor coverings.
More Economical and Easy to Replace
The cost‑effectiveness of carpets is also cited as a reason for their selection. Coşkun, who noted that the flooring can be installed more quickly, said that replacing the carpet entirely in case of damage or wear is also relatively easy.
Effective in Sound Insulation as Well
Coşkun, who said that carpet use is not limited to temperature and cost, said that the carpet contributes to reducing sound between rooms and floors.
Coşkun, who noted that its soft structure provides a more comfortable floor especially for families with children, pointed out that it can create a more forgiving surface compared to hard floors in falls.
Carpet also Has Disadvantages
In addition to the advantages of carpet use, there are also some disadvantages. Difficulty in deep cleaning, the ability to retain dust and allergens, and the tendency to stain easily when liquid spills are among them.
It is noted that carpet may not be a suitable option especially in damp and humid areas, and it is also highlighted that homes with pets can experience odor and staining issues.
Flooring Preference Is Changing in New Homes
Coşkun also noted that in many new homes built in the United States in recent years, floor coverings such as hardwood, laminate, and vinyl are more often chosen over carpet.
Thus it becomes apparent that many factors such as cost, comfort, heat, and sound insulation play a role in why carpet has been widely used in homes in America for many years.
