West Nile virus alert in Europe: 625 cases in 12 countries
According to the latest data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, since the start of the year there have been 625 West Nile virus cases in 12 countries. Italy tops the list with 311 cases, while Greece and Spain also rank among the countries reporting the highest numbers.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) released updated data on West Nile virus in Europe. Since the start of the year, a total of 625 cases have been identified in 12 countries, and the virus has been reported in 99 different regions across the continent.
Most Cases in Italy
According to ECDC data, Italy topped the case count with 311 cases. Greece followed with 157 cases, and Spain trailed with 63 cases.
The cases recorded in three countries accounted for a significant portion of the total case count across Europe.
North Macedonia and Romania also on the List
In North Macedonia, 37; in Romania, 28; and in France, 17 West Nile virus cases were recorded.
While 6 cases were detected in Serbia and 2 in the Netherlands, one case was also reported in Albania, Austria, Germany, and Kosovo.
21 New Regions Added
According to ECDC data, this week 21 additional regions where the West Nile virus was first detected were added to the list. Thus, the number of regions where the virus has been observed rose to 99.
The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans by bites from infected mosquitoes. In Europe, the spread of mosquito-borne diseases is closely monitored, especially during hot periods.
