Cases of the West Nile virus in Europe continue to rise. According to data released by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), a total of 625 cases have been recorded in 12 countries since the beginning of the year.

The country with the most cases was Italy, with 311 cases. Italy was followed by Greece with 157 cases and Spain with 63 cases.

Cases Seen in 12 Countries

In North Macedonia 37, in Romania 28, in France 17, in Serbia 6, and in the Netherlands 2 cases were detected.

Albania, Austria, Germany and Kosovo also recorded one case each. Thus, the number of countries in Europe reporting West Nile virus cases rose to 12.

The number of regions where the virus was detected reached 99. It was noted that this week, 21 regions reported cases for the first time.

Spread by Mosquito Bite

The West Nile virus spreads to humans through bites of infected mosquitoes. While the virus’s natural hosts are wild birds, it is primarily transmitted to people via mosquitoes. Direct human-to-human transmission has not been observed.

Most infected individuals show no symptoms. Those who do develop symptoms may experience fever, headache, flu‑like complaints, swollen lymph nodes, and skin rashes.

In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological disease. People over 50, those with chronic illnesses, and individuals with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe infection.
