Thousands of passengers who boarded the ship with the dream of a sunny Caribbean holiday were confronted with an unexpected change of course. The massive passenger ship Oasis of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean, diverted to Canada after canceling its stops in Florida and the Bahamas due to a severe storm in the Atlantic Ocean.

On 18 October, the ship that departed from Bayonne, New Jersey, with more than 5,000 passengers, had a seven‑day itinerary that included Florida, Nassau, and the famous Bahamian holiday island CocoCay. However, due to weather conditions, the planned route was altered and the vessel headed to Halifax, Canada.

Instead of 27 Degrees, 4 Degrees of Cold!

Passengers who had prepared to swim and sunbathe in the Bahamas encountered temperatures ranging from about 4 to 12 degrees in Halifax. Some holidaymakers, who had only packed summer clothes, found themselves caught unprepared by the cold weather.

One passenger described his spouse’s reaction upon learning of the route change as, “This is a joke, isn’t it?”

One of the most striking stories of the trip involved a family from Toronto, Canada. Nicholas Meli drove for seven hours with his family to New Jersey to head to a Bahamian holiday. However, because of the ship’s route change, the family ended up returning to the country they had left for vacation.

Travel Credit Instead of Compensation for Passengers

Royal Caribbean offered passengers various compensation options due to the route change. The company gave an onboard spending credit ranging from $100 to $600 per person, depending on cabin type. Additionally, passengers were offered a credit equal to 50% of the travel fare they paid, to be used on a future cruise. It was also announced that fees for canceled land tours would be refunded.

While the change prompted reactions from some passengers, other holidaymakers seized the opportunity to explore Canada.

Security Statement from the Company

Royal Caribbean said the route change decision was made to ensure passengers' safety. The change, prompted by adverse weather conditions in the Atlantic, planned the ship to stop in Halifax, Canada.

The Oasis of the Seas is expected to return to New Jersey on Sunday, October 25.
