A man in California survived after being bitten by a rattlesnake and receiving 54 doses of antivenom
Chris Howarth, an Idaho resident visiting his family in California, was treated with 54 doses of antivenom after being bitten twice by a rattlesnake.
Chris Howarth, a resident of Idaho, was bitten twice by a rattlesnake in his backyard while visiting his family in Oroville, California.
The venom from one of the bites quickly entered his bloodstream due to the bite directly hitting a vein.
Howarth experienced tongue numbness, swelling of the lymph nodes, shortness of breath, and a blood clotting disorder.
He received treatment at two hospitals.
Initially, Howarth received 36 doses of antivenom at Oroville Hospital. When the hospital’s antivenom supply ran out, he was transferred to Stanford Hospital, where he received an additional 18 doses.
After receiving a total of 54 doses of antivenom and spending 12 days in intensive care, Howarth was discharged.
Health officials issue a warning.
California Poison Control System officials stated that in most rattlesnake bites, patients only require a few doses of antivenom, and cases requiring 54 doses are extremely rare.
Howarth and his family urged residents of California to be cautious of rattlesnakes, which can be seen throughout the state during the year.
