Under-18 marriages were banned in California
Regulations allowing people under 18 to marry were removed in California. The new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom will take effect on January 1, 2027.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the AB 1267 law that bans child marriage in California. The regulation removes provisions that previously allowed minors to marry with parental consent, setting the minimum age for marriage and civil unions at 18.
Courtney Stodden, who married 50‑year‑old actor Doug Hutchison at age 16, also attended the signing ceremony. Stodden had been working for years to ban child marriage.
California became the 18th state in the United States.
According to the governor's statement, California joined the 17 states that ban child marriage without exceptions. The new regulation raises that number to 18.
Stodden called for the United States to continue her efforts in other states after the ban in California.
