The dark secret of the paradise-like island! Lost treasure, mysterious events, and an FBI investigation.
Palmyra Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, with its turquoise waters and tropical nature, hides a past full of mysterious events. Legends of lost treasure, mysterious claims involving soldiers, and the murder investigated by the FBI bring the island back into the spotlight.

Palmyra Atoll, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, at first glance resembles a tropical paradise with its turquoise waters, lush vegetation, and coral reefs. Yet the island's history is remembered for the mysterious events and unsolved questions that have been told over the years.
Some accounts from the World War II era suggest that soldiers stationed on the island experienced inexplicable fear, paranoia, and unrest. Claims of violence and suicide also contribute to the island's bad reputation.
However, there is no scientific evidence that the incidents stem from supernatural causes. The island's isolated location and harsh natural conditions also become part of the mysterious narratives that surround it.
The 200‑Year‑Old Lost Treasure Legend
One of the oldest rumors about Palmyra Atoll dates back to 1816. According to the tale, a Spanish ship carrying a plundered Inca treasure reached the area where the island is located during its voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
Although it is alleged that gold and precious items were hidden on the island, no concrete evidence confirming the treasure's existence has emerged to date.
Surrounding coral reefs pose a serious threat to ships, and these natural obstacles have contributed to the spread of rumors related to maritime accidents in the past.
The Murder That Drew the FBI In
One of the events that led to Palmyra Atoll's international recognition occurred in 1974. American couple MalcolmMacGraham and his wife Eleanor “Muff” Graham arrived on the island via their yachts. Here, the couple's life, after meeting Buck Walker and Stephanie Stearns, soon took on a mysterious air.
Soon after, no word came from the Graham farm. Walker and Stearns, meanwhile, went to Hawaii with the farm. The farm's disappearance marked the start of the investigation launched to shed light on the event.
Years later, the extraction of human remains belonging to Eleanor Graham from a box on the shore of Palmyra Atoll created a significant development in the investigation. The recovered remains caused the murder case concerning the missing woman to resurface.
One Body Found, the Other Remains Missing
As a result of the investigation, Buck Walker was found guilty of murdering Eleanor Graham. However, the body of Malcolm Graham was never located. This situation kept the case in the public eye for years.
The investigation, which included the FBI, ensured that Palmyra Atoll was known not only for its natural beauty but also for the murder that occurred there.
The incident became the subject of the book And the Sea Will Tell, written by Vincent Bugliosi and Bruce Henderson. The work was later adapted into a television film.
The Mysterious Island Now Under Protection
Palmyra Atoll stands out not only for the narratives about events that occurred in the past, but also for its rich natural life. Located among areas under U.S. protection, the atoll hosts an important marine ecosystem.
Access to the island, which has no permanent settlement, is subject to strict rules. The area continues to be an important research site for scientists studying coral reefs, marine life, and tropical ecosystems.
Although rumors of a lost treasure and a past murder have contributed to Palmyra Atoll's mysterious reputation, there is no scientific evidence confirming the island's association with supernatural events.
