Shock Heist in Chicago's Lincoln Park: Thieves Grab ATM and Flee

A liquor store in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, part of the state of Illinois in the United States, became the target of a vehicle‑borne robbery known as a “crash‑and‑grab” that took place at dawn. Police said a dark‑colored Jeep struck the front portion of the establishment on the 2300 block of North Clark Street. Authorities reported that the incident occurred just before 02:45 on Saturday, September 26.

Target This Time Was an ATM

According to information relayed by the Chicago Police Department, a group of suspects entered the store after the Jeep struck it. The suspects took the ATM from the premises and fled the scene in another vehicle. Initial reports indicate that no one in the store or in the surrounding area was injured during the robbery.

The Store’s Front Facade Sustained Heavy Damage

After the incident, the front portion of the store suffered serious damage. Footage from the area shows the storefront glass shattered and the entrance area damaged by the vehicle impact. The Jeep used by the robbers was left at the scene.

Suspects Escaped in Another Vehicle

According to the police statement, the suspects did not flee in the Jeep they arrived at the scene with after taking the ATM. The group left the area by switching to another vehicle. After the incident, teams are continuing the investigation using footage that could be obtained from the abandoned vehicle and surrounding security cameras.

Detectives Continue the Investigation

The Chicago Police Department's area detectives have launched an investigation into the incident. At this stage, no official information has been released about the suspects' identities or how much money was in the stolen ATM. It was reported that the police investigation is ongoing.

Similar Heists in Chicago Draw Attention

Similar vehicle‑based heists targeting ATMs have occurred in Chicago before. In CBS Chicago's April 2026 report, it was reported that after a similar incident involving a Jeep at a BP station in River North, an ATM was stolen, and that four separate incidents involving ATM theft had been examined in recent weeks. Police stated that at that time it had not been determined whether those incidents were carried out by the same individuals.

ATM Theft in Lincoln Park Happened Before

In Lincoln Park, a liquor store had also been targeted for ATM theft in March. Police said that on March 20, three people who entered Lincoln Park Food & Liquor took the ATM and other items and fled. It was reported that no one was injured and the amount of money stolen could not be determined.
