Palestinian artist Süleyman Mansur has died.

One of the prominent figures of Palestinian modern art—painter, sculptor, and writer Süleyman Mansur—died at the age of 79 at Makasi Hospital in East Jerusalem, where he had been receiving treatment for some time.

Born in 1947 in Birzeit, part of Ramallah, Mansur studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem.

Since the 1970s, he has addressed themes of Palestinian history, collective memory, and identity in his works.

The artist's 1973 work “The Camel of Hardships” (Güçlüklerin Devesi) became one of his most well‑known pieces, featuring a Palestinian figure bearing Jerusalem and the Dome of the Rock on his back.

In his works, Mansur depicted the 1948 Nakba with orange trees and the 1967 War with olive trees.

He received many awards.

Seeing his art as a tool for preserving and transmitting Palestinian identity, Mansur received various awards, including the UNESCO Award, the Rome Award, and the Palestinian Plastic Arts Award.

The artist also taught for many years at various educational and cultural institutions in the West Bank, including Jerusalem University.
