Restrictions on students' use of mobile phones within schools in France are being expanded. President Emmanuel Macron announced that the regulation banning mobile phone use in high schools will come into force on September 1.

In a statement from his social media account, Macron said that there should be no further delay in protecting children from the negative effects of screen use, announcing that the new measure would be implemented at the start of the school term.

The ban also covers high schools.

Restrictions on mobile phone use in France had previously been implemented in primary and secondary schools. The scope of the regulation, which has been in force since 2018, was expanded with the new law to also include high‑school students.

The new policy aims to limit students' phone use in the school environment and reduce distraction caused by digital devices during lessons.

The law passed through Parliament and the Senate.

The regulation banning cell phone use in high schools was adopted by the French National Assembly and the Senate. The law then passed the Constitutional Council's approval, overcoming the legal obstacles to its entry into force.

We Can't Wait Any Longer

Macron assessed the regulation as an important step to protect children from the negative effects of the digital world.

The French administration also keeps reducing the time children spend in front of screens on its agenda, in addition to the effects of phone use in the educational environment. The new regulation will take effect in high schools starting with the school year that begins on September 1.
