A horrific incident occurred on 18 June at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdon, England. A 3‑year‑old child who was attacked inside the crocodile enclosure was taken to hospital as a seriously injured patient. It was announced that the child underwent seven separate surgeries as part of his treatment.

The Cambridgeshire Police Department said it received a report on 18 June at 13:24 that a child had been seriously injured in the crocodile enclosure at the zoo, and that its teams were dispatched to the scene.

Zoo Staff Rescued

The child who was attacked in the area where the crocodiles were kept was removed from the enclosure by zoo staff. The child received first aid on site before being taken to hospital.

The family said that after the attack the extent of the loss of sensation, movement and function in the child's arms, wrists and hands remained unclear for a long time.

Had 7 Surgeries

It was reported that the young child was taken for a surgery lasting about 12 hours immediately after the attack. In the child's final operation, after undergoing a total of seven surgeries during treatment, it was reported that a section of the damaged nerve was reconstructed using a nerve taken from the child's leg.

In a statement on July 3, the family said that the process they had experienced was extremely uncertain and difficult for them, and that they were not sure whether their child could recover.

Discharged from Hospital

In their latest statement on August 24, the family announced that the 3-year-old had been discharged from the hospital several weeks ago.

After the child's discharge, the family said they were taking time to adjust to new living conditions and to reacclimate to the home environment. It was stated that the young child's recovery process was continuing.

30-Year-Old Suspect Arrested

In the course of the investigation into the incident, police teams detained a 30‑year‑old man on suspicion of attempted murder. Officials announced that the suspect had been released on bail until September 18 and that it was decided he was not suitable for questioning.

While the police investigation into the incident continued, it was stated that details of how the attack unfolded were being examined as part of the inquiry.
