Empty burial plots in Istanbul have cost more than 334,000 Turkish Lira
Due to exceeding 90% occupancy rates in city-center cemeteries, finding empty burial plots has become difficult, with the cost of purchasing a grave in first-group cemeteries rising to 334,896 Turkish Lira while still alive.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s (IBB) Cemetery Directorate is directing new burials primarily to Kilyos, Silivri Çanta, Çekmeköy, and other outer-region cemeteries as occupancy rates in central city cemeteries have exceeded 90 percent.
Due to the difficulty of accessing cemeteries far from the city center, many families are opting to bury their deceased in their hometowns. The municipality’s free provision of funeral homes, shrouding, coffin services, and intercity transport is also cited as a factor influencing this choice.
Prices in first-tier cemeteries have surpassed 334,000 lira
Under the 2026 tariff, purchasing a vacant grave plot in first-tier cemeteries like Zincirlikuyu, Karacaahmet, Aşiyan, and Ulus is set at 334,896 lira while the deceased was still alive.
It has been noted that no vacant space remains in historic cemeteries such as Aşiyan, Karacaahmet, Zincirlikuyu, Eyüpsultan, and Edirnekapı, with burials now concentrated in Kilyos, Silivri Yeni, Çanta, Pendik Yeni, Tuzla Şifa, and Kısırkaya cemeteries.
Similar challenges are observed in other major cities like Ankara and Izmir, where grave prices have risen significantly in recent years, it was stated.
