Medical helicopter crashes in open waters of California: 2 dead, 1 missing

A medical helicopter operating in the waters off Catalina Island in California, USA, crashed into the sea, killing two people. While two others were taken to hospital as injured, search operations were launched to reach a person aboard the helicopter.

Helicopter Crashed Shortly After Takeoff

The accident occurred Wednesday night in the waters off Catalina Island near Los Angeles. Officials said the medical helicopter fell into the sea shortly after taking off from the island.

Jonathan Torres of the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported that two people lost their lives in the crash, while two others were rescued and transported to hospitals in the area. Search efforts continue for the fifth person aboard the helicopter.

Search and Rescue Teams Deployed to the Area

Officials said the incident report arrived just before 20:00 local time. Consequently, Los Angeles County units and U.S. Coast Guard teams were dispatched to the area.

It was reported that the helicopter crashed into the sea approximately 35 kilometres from the centre of Los Angeles County and sank into waters about 73 metres deep.

The helicopter's company is under investigation.

It was stated that at least one of the injured was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles, but no detailed information about his health condition has yet been released.

According to information in the local press, the helicopter is believed to belong to REACH Air Medical Services, a company headquartered in Sacramento.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, while search and rescue operations to locate the missing person continue.
