North Korea's nuclear tests triggered a chain of earthquakes.
South Korean and Chinese researchers' study revealed that seismic activity around North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site increased markedly after the 2017 test. According to the research, about 1,330 earthquakes have been recorded in the region since that date.

The joint study by researchers from South Korea and China revealed striking results regarding seismic activity around the Punggye‑ri test site where North Korea conducts nuclear tests. The study found a noticeable increase in the number of earthquakes in the region following the 2017 nuclear test.
Area Around the Nuclear Test Site Examined
In a study conducted by scientists from Pusan National University in South Korea and Chengdu University of Technology in China, seismic data around Mount Mantap, the location of the Punggye‑ri nuclear test site, were scrutinized.
Researchers analyzed seismic‑wave data recorded since 2008 to study earthquake activity in the area. The study determined that tremors in the region increased markedly after nuclear activities.
1,330 Earthquakes Recorded After the 2017 Test
One of the study's most striking findings was the seismic activity that emerged after North Korea's final nuclear test in 2017.
According to data, after 2017, about 1330 earthquakes occurred in the region. Researchers noted that during this period, changes were observed not only in the number of earthquakes but also in the magnitude of the tremors.
Earthquakes Became More Frequent and Stronger
The study stated that the earthquakes observed after nuclear tests before 2017 were mostly short‑lived and more limited tremors.
In contrast, after the 2017 nuclear test, seismic activity in the region was recorded as occurring more frequently and larger tremors began to appear.
Researchers indicated that the data pointed to a relationship between nuclear activities and seismic activity in the region.
North Korea Conducted an Underground Nuclear Test
North Korea has carried out its nuclear tests at the Punggye‑ri test site since 2006. The Pyongyang regime conducted a total of six nuclear tests: one each in 2006, 2009, 2013, and 2017, and two in 2016.
The new study is significant for drawing attention to the marked increase in seismic activity around Mount Mantap following the most recent nuclear test.
