In New York, a raffle will distribute 2,100 free Broadway tickets for high school students; applications will close on August 17.

In the United States, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration launched a free ticket raffle to increase high school students' access to Broadway shows in the city. Under the program, a total of 2,100 tickets were allocated for students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.
Two Ticket Rights in the Raffle
Students who win the raffle will have the right to obtain up to two free tickets to one of the selected shows. Applications opened on August 13, and the participation process for the raffle will end at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17.

Seven Broadway Shows Selected
Seven productions were added to the free ticket program. Students will be able to choose from the following shows: Buena Vista Social Club, In the Heights, School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, The Lost Boys, The Great Gatsby, and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).
Membership for Every Student Who Participates in the Raffle
Another arm of the program is the Theatre Development Fund (TDF) membership. Students who enter the raffle will receive a two‑month free TDF membership even if they do not win a free ticket.
Access to Discounted Cultural Events
TDF membership grants access to discounted cultural events beyond Broadway shows. Members can take advantage of lower prices for performances in music, dance, and certain cultural institutions included in the program, as well as theater.
Targeting Young Audiences for Broadway
The program is implemented as an initiative to increase access to live theater for high‑school students in New York. TDF runs various programs across the city to make cultural and artistic events more accessible. According to information the institution provided to the New York City Council, TDF played a role in ticket sales that reached 13% of Broadway audiences in the 2024‑25 season and connected more than one million people with over 1,800 productions.
Last Day for Applications
Students of appropriate age from New York who wish to take advantage of the free Broadway ticket raffle must complete their applications before 10:00 on Monday, August 17. After the raffle, the selected students will be able to use up to two free tickets for one of the Broadway productions designated in the program.
