After a small aircraft belonging to a family from Miami, Florida, USA, went missing in the open waters of the Bahamas, search operations found the lifeless bodies of four people. Bahamian authorities said the plane disappeared after taking off from Great Harbour Cay on Monday and that four people lost their lives in the wreckage area.
Last Minutes of the Flight
According to a statement by Bahamian police, the aircraft took off from Great Harbour Cay at about 10:12 a.m. on Monday, bound for Miami Executive Airport in Miami‑Dade County. The family said the last contact with the plane was at 11:04 a.m. over the western side of Andros Island.
Contact Lost Over Andros Waters
Air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft when it was about 13 miles west of Andros Island. Bahamian police said teams on Andros Island had begun a search for the plane, which is believed to have crashed in the Red Bays waters off North Andros.
The identities of those on board were announced by family members. In addition to 80‑year‑old pilot Mario Lamar, his 79‑year‑old wife Lili Lamar and their grandchildren, 28‑year‑old Sofia Sosa and 22‑year‑old Christian Sosa, were on the aircraft. All four were reported to have departed for Miami.
Alarm Raised When No News Could Be Obtained From Family
According to family member Silvia Larrieu, four people were returning to their homes in Miami after a long weekend holiday. It was noted that Sofia Sosa had informed her family in the group chat that she was on the road, and that Mario Lamar's flight plan included the aircraft's estimated arrival time. The family realized that the messages could not be delivered and subsequently reported the incident to authorities.
Experienced Pilot Details
Family member Larrieu said that Mario Lamar has more than 40 years of flight experience. Larrieu, who noted that Lamar places great importance on the maintenance of his aircraft and is an extremely careful pilot, stated that the incident was a heavy loss for the family. It was reported that a family member participating in the search found one of the bodies during the boat search.
Aircraft Model Revealed
Bahamian police announced that the aircraft involved in the accident was a five‑person PA‑34 Piper. It was reported that the aircraft's tail number was N212ML and that it had taken off from Great Harbour Cay, in the Berry Islands region of the Bahamas.
US Coast Guard Joins the Search
Bahamian authorities, on Monday at about 14:00, reached out to the US Coast Guard to request support in locating the downed aircraft. The US Coast Guard spokesperson said that officers at the Southeast Region command center coordinated the sending of an HC‑144 Ocean Sentry aircraft to the area to aid the Bahamian authorities' search operations.
Bodies of 4 Individuals Found
The Royal Bahamian Defence Force announced that the bodies of four individuals were found on Tuesday. Bahamian police reported that the funerals were transported to the Bahamas. Thus, it was confirmed that all four family members aboard the small aircraft that went missing on Monday while en route back to Miami had lost their lives.
