The Burning Man 2026 festival held in the Black Rock Desert region of Nevada, United States, ended with the loss of three participants. Pershing County Sheriff and forensic medical officer Jerry Allen announced that two people died on the festival grounds, while a third participant lost his life while being transported to a hospital in Reno. Details regarding the third case are still limited.

First death occurred despite medical intervention.

The first death at the festival occurred on September 3. According to a statement from the Burning Man Project, a male participant in his mid‑50s suffered a medical emergency in Black Rock City. After the incident, lifesaving intervention was performed and the individual was taken to the festival's emergency medical center. However, despite all interventions, he could not be saved.

Second participant found dead in camp

The second death occurred on September 5. The Burning Man Project announced that 60‑year‑old Craigh Mann was found dead on the campsite by his campmates at approximately 3:00 p.m. Authorities stated that initial investigations did not suspect murder or any other criminal element in the incident. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Third death occurred on the way to hospital

A third death was reported on the festival's closing day, September 7. Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said a participant lost his life while being transported to a hospital in Reno. Because the death occurred outside Pershing County borders, the investigation will be conducted within Washoe County authorities' jurisdiction. The identity of the deceased has not been released to the public.

Autopsy Awaited to Determine Cause of Death

While investigations into the first two deaths continue, officials said there is currently no suspicion of homicide. However, autopsy and toxicology results are awaited to establish the definitive causes of death. Details regarding the third case are expected to be clarified after review by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the relevant forensic authorities.

Jerry Allen said that, under normal circumstances, the festival averages one death per year. In the 2026 event, that number rose to three. The event, part of the festival's 40th-anniversary celebrations, began on August 30 and ended on September 7. Black Rock City is located about 120 miles north of Reno.

A Murder Investigation Was Initiated Last Year

These year's deaths followed the fatal incident that occurred at Burning Man in 2025. Last year, 37‑year‑old Vadim Kruglov was found dead, stabbed during the festival, and the case was treated as a murder investigation. The 2025 file reports that no arrest has yet been made and the investigation is ongoing.
