According to the police statement, the incident occurred at about 05:00 in the morning at the intersection of West Washington Place and Sixth Avenue. The 22‑year‑old woman was severely injured when a vehicle struck her while she was attempting to cross the pedestrian crossing on West Washington Place.

Driver Fled the Scene
The NYPD said the driver involved in the crash, instead of stopping, veered northward along Sixth Avenue toward Waverly Place. Police teams began work to locate the fleeing driver and vehicle.
Witnesses Rushed to Help
According to CBS News, Corey Schwartz, who was nearby during the incident, said people suddenly started shouting and that he saw the young woman on the ground. Schwartz said he immediately went to her side, checked her pulse, and that police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.
Died in Hospital
The woman taken to the hospital by emergency response teams could not be saved despite all interventions. Officials announced that the young woman died in the hospital. Police have not yet released the victim's identity to the public.
