New York's New Theater Stage for Immigrant Stories

In the United States, a new performing‑arts center focused on immigrant communities' stories opened its doors in the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, New York. The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante has begun hosting New Yorkers in its new 19‑square‑kilometer center. The center includes two theater halls as well as studios and rehearsal spaces for dance, theater, and music work.

A Permanent Address After 15 Years

The People’s Theatre previously operated under the name The People’s Theatre Project. Since 2009, the organization has carried out education and performing‑arts work in various parts of New York, especially Inwood and Washington Heights. The new center became the organization’s first permanent venue after more than 15 years of activity. Construction of the project began in 2023.

Immigrants' Stories Will Be Brought to the Stage

The center’s primary goal is to make the experiences of New York’s diverse immigrant communities visible through the arts of theater, dance, and music. One of the founders, Mino Lora, immigrated from the Dominican Republic to New York in the early 2000s. Lora and his wife, along with theater artist Bob Braswell, laid the foundation of the organization in 2009. Lora says the new center aims to pass on the fact that immigrants and their stories belong to New York to future generations.

Support from Lin‑Manuel Miranda

Among the supporters of the project is Lin‑Manuel Miranda, a well‑known figure in New York theatre. One of the rooms in the center is named after Miranda’s uncle, Ernesto Concepción Senior. According to Miranda, Concepción was the founder of the Actors Guild in Puerto Rico and a veteran actor who worked in the theatre world for many years. Miranda said that by bringing the new center’s artists and audiences together under one roof, the immigrant experience will be reinforced in New York’s cultural narrative.

First Play on September 25

The first show at the new center of The People’s Theatre will be staged on September 25.

The bilingual production titled “Guac” tells the story of a father struggling with loss. In the coming months, the center plans to feature stories from communities of diverse languages and cultural backgrounds.

A New Space for Immigrants in New York

The center at 419 West 206th Street creates a permanent arts space for immigrant communities around Inwood and Washington Heights. According to official information from The People’s Theatre, the center will not only support the cultural and artistic production of immigrant communities in New York but also host educational and community interaction programs.
