In the United States, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency due to rising measles cases in the state. The decision signed on October 5 aims to accelerate intervention in the ongoing outbreak outside New York City.

According to data from the New York Department of Health, as of October 3 this year the state has a total of 108 confirmed measles cases. Seven of the cases were in New York City, and 101 were recorded in areas outside the city.

The majority of cases are in the state's rural areas.

Officials point to a rise in cases, especially in rural areas where vaccination rates are low.

In a September statement, the Department of Health reported a noticeable increase in measles cases in New York’s Capital, Central, and Western regions. By mid‑September, the statewide total had been announced as 57 cases.

Since mid‑July, 92 new cases have been reported in 18 counties outside New York City.

What does the emergency decision mean?

Governor Hochul's decision facilitates the use of powers aimed at accelerating medical intervention and vaccination efforts.

The decision does not mean a stay‑at‑home order, lockdown, or general travel restriction. The state administration’s focus is on case tracking, identifying contacts, and delivering the MMR vaccine to unvaccinated individuals.

Officials are highlighting the MMR vaccine.

The New York Department of Health says the most effective protection against measles is the current measles‑mumps‑rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Health officials urge New Yorkers to check their vaccination status and, in particular, to ensure that children have completed the recommended vaccines.

Measles is an extremely contagious disease. The illness can begin with symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and redness in the eyes; later a widespread rash can appear on the body.

Outbreak tracking continues in New York.

The State Health Ministry, in order to monitor case numbers and regional developments, also launched the Measles Dashboard application in September.

Officials are continuing contact tracing and vaccination efforts in the areas where cases have been reported, in cooperation with local health units. The New York administration focuses on protecting unvaccinated individuals to bring the outbreak under control.
