Critical Decision in New York: TSK Withdraws from Iraq!
In a meeting in New York between Turkish President Erdoğan and Iraqi Prime Minister Zeydi, an agreement was reached on the gradual handover of the Başika-Zilkan settlement to Iraq.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali ez‑Zeydi held a meeting in New York as part of the United Nations General Assembly 81st session. In the closed‑door meeting held in Turkey, the security and strategic relations between the two countries were assessed. The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Trade Ömer Bolat, head of the National Intelligence Organization İbrahim Kalın, and other officials.
Decision to Transfer Başika‑Zilkan
After the meeting, a joint statement was issued by Turkey and Iraq. According to the statement, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) will gradually hand over the Başika‑Zilkan arrangement to the Iraqi Federal Government in line with the progress made in Iraq's security measures, following the agreed mechanism and timetable.
Security Agreement in Sincar
The two countries also reached an agreement on fully establishing Iraqi state authority in Sincar. The meeting also expressed a joint will to end the presence of prohibited foreign armed elements in the region. It was noted that these arrangements are linked to the security dimension of the process of transferring the Başika‑Zilkan arrangement.
Delivery of Weapons to the State on the Agenda
Iraq Prime Minister Ali Zeidi, in a statement on September 12, said that groups linked to the terrorist organization PKK in Sinjar would begin handing over their weapons to the Iraqi state. Zeidi also noted that Mount Sinjar would come entirely under government control. It was stated that the Iraqi government would allow certain individuals who meet the necessary conditions to join security institutions within a legal framework.
End to Armed Forces Outside the State
In Zeidi's earlier statements, it was noted that concentrating security decisions in a single center was important for Sinjar's stability. The Iraqi Prime Minister also said that no security or military force outside the state's control would be allowed, and that the region would not be permitted to revert to a conflict environment.
Trade and the Development Path Also on the Table
In the meeting between Erdoğan and Zeidi, security issues were discussed alongside economic relations. Turkey and Iraq agreed on increasing bilateral trade and investment volume, implementing previously signed agreements, and accelerating joint strategic projects. Within this framework, the Development Path Project stood out in particular.
