In the United States, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx district of New York is preparing to open its doors to visitors with a comprehensive program celebrating Mexico's deep-rooted tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The celebration will take place between October 3 and November 2, 2026.
"Day of the Dead" is Not Halloween!
With its skeletal figures and colorful decorations, Día de los Muertos, contrary to its appearance, is known as a tradition in Mexican culture that honors deceased loved ones. The New York Botanical Garden will also introduce visitors to this culture's understanding of life, death, and remembrance as part of the event.
A Grand Ofrenda Was Set Up in the Garden
One of the event's key components will be the "ofrenda" created in Everett Children's Adventure Garden. This special altar, which holds an important place in Mexican tradition, is prepared to honor those who have lost loved ones. Visitors will also be able to leave a photo or written memory in the shared remembrance space.
Orange Velvet Flowers Will Cover Every Corner
Plants known as the Mexican marigold, cempasúchil, will be used for their vivid colors. The garden will also feature skull figures, large-scale La Catrina depictions, and autumn decorations.
Music and Dance Events: Mexican Culture Moves to the Stage
During certain weekends in October, Mexican music performances will take place. The Son Pecadores group will introduce visitors to the latest jarocho music linked to Veracruz. On 31 October and 2 November, MAZarte will present Mexican folk dance shows.
Grand Procession on 1 November
One of the most striking parts of the celebrations will be the Día de los Muertos procession on 1 November. At 13:00, attendees will work on crafts, and at 14:00 a procession featuring La Catrina, skeletons, and large puppets made of butterflies will be staged.
Special Programs for Children Have Been Prepared
To allow children in the garden to get to know the culture up close, planting of velvet flowers, story activities, art projects, and various hands‑on programs will be organized. Throughout the program, activities will be offered to families based on concepts of remembrance, family, and cultural heritage.
New York Botanical Garden Organizes for the First Time
New York Botanical Garden is organizing the Día de los Muertos program for the first time as a comprehensive garden event in the fall of 2026. According to the garden's statement, the program, to be held on a 250‑acre area, brings together Mexico's cultural tradition focused on life and family bonds with a fall atmosphere.
