In Spain, the couple Boris and Rosa, who want to establish a self‑sufficient life away from city life, began converting an abandoned plot of land about 16 years ago. The family, building four small houses with earth, straw, and recycled materials, gets its electricity from the sun and its water from a well. Thanks to the system they built, the couple has not paid electricity or water bills for 16 years.
They Built 4 Houses on the Abandoned Plot
Boris and Rosa, about 16 years ago, took action to create a life independent of city infrastructure by utilizing an unused plot of land.
When they first arrived, the land had no structures; over the years the couple developed it on their own, building four small buildings with natural materials.
During construction, the family used earth, straw, and wood, and also repurposed discarded glass bottles and recycled materials. For insulation on the roof of one of the first buildings, they used an old truck tire.
The family turned this place into a permanent living space about five years ago. Today they continue living on the plot with their son Riu.
They Source Electricity from the Sun and Water from a Well
The property lacks connections to the electric grid and municipal water. The family's energy needs are met by solar panels installed in the garden.
The electricity generated by the panels is stored in batteries and used to light the house and power everyday appliances.
They meet their water needs with an old well dug by the former owner. Thus they can sustain their daily life without relying on municipal networks.
They Have Not Paid Electricity and Water Bills for 16 Years
Boris and Rosa, who installed their own energy and water systems, do not pay electricity and water bills because they are not connected to the city grids.
However, this way of life is not entirely cost‑free. Maintenance of solar panels, replacement of batteries, and other technical needs require occasional spending.
They also produce part of their food themselves.
Boris and Rosa are working to cut their external dependence not only in energy and water, but also in food.
The family that cultivates organic vegetables in their garden and raises poultry meets part of its needs with its own means.
The couple, stating that they aim to reduce consumption rather than completely withdraw from society, view the lifestyle they have established as a sustainable legacy they can pass on to their son Riu.
