Media embargo on Trump: Five major channels stand together
After President Donald Trump’s CNN, MS NOW, and Politico reporters were barred from entering the White House, the United States’ major television networks suspended their activities in the joint media pool. Due to the boycott, Trump’s events and some White House programs were not broadcast live on the major channels.
The White House access ban targeting CNN, MS NOW, and Politico—claiming they were publishing negative, unfounded stories about President Donald Trump—sparked a notable show of solidarity in U.S. media.
Under the White House Press Pool, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, and CNN, which followed the president, normally shared costs and alternated coverage of the events. After CNN’s White House studio was left vacant, the other major broadcasters also suspended joint pool activities instead of stepping in for the rival network to continue the role.

Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton announced that the president’s press‑pool events would be boycotted until CNN’s access restriction was lifted.
The New York Times and The Washington Post also announced that they would not share photographs from White House events. Thus the Trump administration faced a collective stance from numerous major media outlets, beyond the tensions it had with individual organizations.
CNN was also scheduled to appear at Trump’s United Nations General Assembly program in New York. However, because CNN was banned, the other major channels likewise failed to fulfill their duties in the joint media pool.
The White House launched its own broadcast.
After the boycott, the White House shifted to broadcasting the events on its own channels. Footage of the opening of Trump's new helicopter pad was streamed live on YouTube. However, due to the absence of professional camera and microphone crews at the event, Trump's speech was at times drowned out by the helicopter's sound in the background.
CNN anchor Erin Burnett, interpreting the incident through the lens of Trump's relationship with the media, argued that the president required the attention of the press he had criticized.
That same evening, the White House promoted its own broadcast system as an alternative to the boycott of American television. Yet, over the course of the week, major television networks persisted in not relaying footage from the events.
A similar scene unfolded during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the White House. Although reporters from Fox News, CBS, and NBC were present at the welcome ceremony, they did not record footage.
After the boycott, smaller conservative-leaning outlets Real America’s Voice and LindellTV formed an alternative media pool. However, these broadcasts could not replace mainstream media outlets.
