How Does El Niño Form?
El Niño is a natural climate cycle that arises from sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean rising above normal. Under normal conditions, winds blowing from east to west carry warm waters toward the Asian side, but when those winds weaken, the warm waters move eastward.
The rise in ocean temperature can alter atmospheric circulation, leading to changes in precipitation, drought, storms, and temperature patterns across different regions of the world.
Experts, who model ocean temperatures and closely monitor them via sea buoys, note that the strength of the temperature rise is an important indicator for determining the magnitude of El Niño’s impacts.
