After a bright flash visible for about six seconds across Central European skies, a shocking incident unfolded in Germany. A meteor fragment the size of a football pierced a house roof and fell into a bedroom. Search was launched to find other fragments in the area.
A bright light seen in the skies over Central Europe illuminated the sky for a brief moment before a striking event occurred. The light display, caused by the entry of a celestial body estimated to be a few meters in diameter, lasted about six seconds.
The event was observed not only from Germany but also from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
Thousands of People Reported the Event
Following the event monitored by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the AllSky7 meteor observation network, more than 3,000 eyewitness reports reached the International Meteor Organization.
The brightness and explosion that occurred during the celestial body's entry into the atmosphere were also seen over a wide area in neighboring countries.
Search for Meteor Fragments Initiated
After entering the atmosphere, it was assessed that fragments of the meteor fell in various areas. Consequently, search operations were launched in some settlements in Germany's Rhineland‑Palatinate state to locate meteor fragments.
While one fragment was found near Koblenz, the most striking detail of the incident was that a meteor fragment pierced a house's roof and reached the bedroom on the lower floor.
The entry of a fragment the size of a football into the roof caused great surprise in the area.
A gram can sell for up to 281,000 TL.
With the discovery of meteor fragments, the economic value of meteors has resurfaced.
Stephan Decker, president of the Oberwesel Meteor Museum and meteor dealer, stated that the price per gram of meteors can range from 1 euro to 5,000 euros depending on their characteristics.
The price per gram of 5,000 euros, when calculated at the current exchange rate, amounts to roughly 281,000 Turkish lira.
Its value is defined by its characteristics.
The price of a meteorite is influenced by many factors such as its chemical composition, rarity, how well it has been preserved, and how much time has passed since it fell to Earth.
Especially rare and newly fallen meteorite fragments can attract intense interest from collectors. Therefore, it is noted that the fragments found in the region after the incident in Germany may hold value not only scientifically but also economically.
