The rise in West Nile virus cases in Greece has raised concerns. The Greek National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced that the virus posed a nationwide risk during the period when mosquitoes were active. The agency emphasized that citizens in the risk group should be especially vigilant against mosquito bites.

It was reported that a significant portion of the cases were concentrated in the Eastern Attica region near Athens, particularly in the municipalities of Markopoulo and Spata.

The Cause of the Cases Is Still Unclear

Professor Gikas Mayorkinis, Hygiene and Epidemiology at the Athens National and Kapodistrias University (EKPA) School of Medicine, told state broadcaster ERT that the exact cause of the rise in cases had not yet been identified.

Mayorkinis said that the West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to mosquitoes via infected birds. The expert, who noted that bird species such as crows and storks can play a role in the virus’s circulation, suggested that recent increases could be influenced by changes in birds’ habitats and migration routes.

Mayorkinis noted that environmental changes occurring in the region following the Daniel storm that hit Thessaly in 2023 could be considered among the possible causes.

Who Is at Greater Risk?

According to experts, West Nile virus infection is often asymptomatic or mild in most people, but can cause serious health issues in some.

Mayorkinis noted that people over 50, those with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic conditions are at higher risk of severe complications.

Emphasizing that advancing age is one of the most important risk factors for severe disease and fatal complications, the expert urged those in the risk group to be especially careful to avoid mosquito bites.

Expert Warning on Mosquitoes

Authorities are recommending that citizens take various measures against mosquito bites.

In this context, it is recommended to use approved mosquito repellents, install window screens, use mosquito nets when necessary, and wear clothing that covers the body as much as possible.

It is also noted that stagnant water pools that facilitate mosquito breeding in homes, balconies, gardens, and yards must be eliminated.

EODY warns that during the period when mosquitoes are active, the West Nile virus could emerge not only in areas where cases have already been observed but across Greece as a whole.
