He extracted 647 kilograms of gold, lost his wealth: The famous miner's condition years later shocked.
Chico Osorio, who extracted 647 kilograms of gold from a mine he operated in Serra Pelada, Brazil, and amassed a great fortune, lost a significant portion of what he earned over the years. The 73‑year‑old miner, despite all his losses, is still in pursuit of finding a new gold vein.

Brazil's world-famous gold mine Serra Pelada was one of the places where thousands of people flocked in the 1980s, hoping to achieve great wealth. One of those names was Chico Osorio, who extracted hundreds of kilograms of gold from the mine he operated and quickly amassed a large fortune. However, because he could not manage the millions he earned properly, he lost most of what he had over the years.
From Poverty to the Gold Mine
Born on 28 December 1952, Chico Osorio spent his childhood in northeastern Brazil amid economic hardship. Osorio was abandoned by his father at a young age and was raised by his mother, grandfather, and grandmother.
As a child, Osorio dreamed of becoming a musician and making a living by playing guitar, but he could not realize that plan due to financial constraints.
He Tried His Luck at Serra Pelada
Osorio went to Serra Pelada in 1980 to search for gold. In the early days, he worked on one of the machines that broke up the gold ore.
Later, together with his wife, he sold the 1979 model Chevette car he owned and bought his own crusher machine. Thus he began to continue his mining activities on his own account.
However, the work he did over the first eight months did not bring any profit. Just as he was about to lose all hope, a miner from the team found an eye-catching rock fragment.
With the processing of the rock, approximately2,6 kilogram of pure goldcame to light. This discovery marked the beginning of a new era in Osorio's life.
He extracted 647 kilograms of gold from his shaft.

This production has turned Osorio into one of the standout miners of Serra Pelada. Thanks to the fortune he won, he came to own not only excavators but also airplanes and various immovable assets.
Osorio, who once lived in poverty, shortly became the owner of a substantial fortune.
He didn’t manage his wealth; his assets slipped away one by one.
However, the wealth that came with gold did not last long. It is said that Osorio failed to invest the money he earned properly.
During the high‑inflation period, instead of directing his money into investments, he kept it in banks and is said to have continued investing in mines that no longer produce gold.
Selling his revenue‑generating crushing machines was one of the key decisions that led to a decline in his wealth. In later years he lost his planes and many of his assets.
Still Pursuing Gold at 73
Osorio today continues to live in Curionópolis, where Serra Pelada is located.
The 73‑year‑old miner, who once amassed great wealth by extracting hundreds of kilograms of gold, has not given up on searching for gold despite all his losses. Osorio still holds onto the hope of finding a new gold vein.
