US raid on Smoke Shop in Connecticut: Two Turks in custody
In Connecticut, the investigation that began when a customer was hospitalized led to the arrest of two Turkish employees. During the raid on Smoke Shop, prohibited items and $14,000 in cash were seized.
The PuffCity Smoke Shop in Wallingford, Connecticut, located in the New England region of the northeastern United States, became the focus of a police investigation after a customer suffered a serious health problem following consumption of a product purchased from the store. Wallingford police launched an inquiry into the business after the incident in July. It was determined that the customer had previously purchased a 'cannabis gummy' from PuffCity and subsequently exhibited a severe reaction.
The police review found that the product contained the kratom alkaloids 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and 7-Hydroxymitragynine pseudoindoxyl. Those substances are classified as controlled substances in Connecticut.
After a two-month investigation, a raid
In the roughly two-month investigation, police obtained evidence that products containing prohibited substances were being held and sold at PuffCity. Wallingford police conducted a search and seizure operation against the business and a related vehicle on September 11. The raid seized not only prohibited products but also about $14,000 in cash.
Two Turkish employees were detained
During the operation, PuffCity employees 51-year-old Oğuzhan G. and 27-year-old Barış A. were detained. Oğuzhan G., who lives in Branford, and Barış A., who lives in Wallingford, were charged with unlawful possession of a prohibited substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of sale.
A $15,000 bail was set for each suspect. Oğuzhan G. is scheduled to appear before a judge at the Connecticut Superior Court in Meriden on September 24, while Barış A. is set to do so on September 25.
Kratom products were banned in Connecticut.
In Connecticut, kratom and certain kratom‑derived substances were classified as Schedule I controlled substances in 2026. State officials asked businesses to remove the products from shelves and either return or destroy them within the specified period. According to police investigations, evidence was obtained that sales of products containing the banned substances in PuffCity continued.
The court process is starting.
The legal process continues over the charges against two employees. Court records indicate that information on whether the suspects have paid bail has not yet been entered.
