The U.S. Department of State announced that more than 250,000 visas have been cancelled since President Donald Trump took office.

Immigration-AnalyticsAccording to the report, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the cancellations were carried out on grounds of criminal activity, violation of visa conditions, fraud, abuse of the immigration system, and national security reasons.

According to the statement, among the cancelled visas there are about 2,300 birth‑tourism related visas.

However, the Ministry did not publish a detailed report on the evidence or evaluation criteria used to classify these individuals into that category.

There is no permission to issue visas for birth tourism.

The U.S. Department of State, with the regulation that entered into force on January 24, 2020, banned issuing B‑type visitor visas to individuals whose primary purpose is to obtain citizenship through birth in the United States.

Today the ministry also states that birth tourism is not a legitimate travel purpose for a visitor visa.

The regulation was originally drafted to be applied at the time of visa application. The recently disclosed figure of 2,300, however, covers the revocation of visas previously issued. The ministry has not provided the public with detailed information on the evidence used in those revocations.

The majority of the total 250,000 is due to various reasons.

The more than 250,000 revocations announced by the Department of State are not limited to birth tourism. The ministry said that various grounds such as assault, driving under the influence, theft, drug offenses, fraud, and violations of visa conditions also play a role in revocations.

Thus, the 2,300 birth‑tourism cases disclosed represent only a small fraction of total visa revocations. The absence of a detailed breakdown by visa type and revocation grounds in the ministry’s publicly available data makes independent verification of the figures difficult.

For visitors planning to give birth in ABD, the basic rule has not changed: traveling to ABD solely for the purpose of the child acquiring citizenship is not accepted under the B-type visitor visa.
