The paint contractor Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias, who lives in Dallas, was detained while returning from Mexico to the United States on June 26, 2026. Andrade-Covarrubias, who is said to hold a green card, was charged by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with concealing a theft offense he was involved in in 2004 in his residency application.
However, Andrade-Covarrubias's daughter said that her father disclosed the alleged crime during the application and that the residency permit was approved. Facing deportation proceedings, Andrade-Covarrubias was found unresponsive by officers at the Rio Grande Processing Center where he was held on October 17. Despite interventions, he died.
Family's Allegation of Medical Neglect
Andrade-Covarrubias's family alleged that he was not given the medications he used for heart, diabetes, and blood pressure conditions while in custody. The family also claimed that officers ignored his complaints of chest pain.
ICE, on the other hand, maintained that Andrade-Covarrubias received appropriate medical care during his detention.
Cause of Death Still Unclear
The exact cause of Andrade-Covarrubias's death has not yet been disclosed. The cause of death remains uncertain due to the pending autopsy results.
While the family’s allegations of medical negligence clash with ICE’s statements, the autopsy results are expected to be decisive in clarifying the incident.
