In the United States, rising food prices and cost of living continue to strain low‑income families' budgets, while the federal government has updated the assistance provided under the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) announced that the new regulation effective October 1, 2026 increases the monthly food assistance provided to low‑income households. The new amounts, which will be in effect until September 30, 2027, aim to ease the economic burden families face in grocery shopping.

Aid up to $1,023 for a Four‑Person Household

Under the new regulation, the maximum monthly SNAP benefit a four‑person household can receive has risen to $1,023. However, this amount is not automatically paid to all families. The benefit amount is determined based on the number of people in the household, total income, housing expenses, and other eligibility criteria.

According to the announced maximum assistance amounts, a single-person household can receive up to $306 per month, a two-person household up to $562, and a three-person household up to $808.

In five-person families, assistance can reach $1,217; in six-person families, up to $1,463; and in eight-person households, up to $1,841.

Who Can Benefit From This Assistance?

Those wishing to use the SNAP program must meet specific income and eligibility criteria.

In Pennsylvania, the monthly gross income limit for a four-person household is set at $5,500. However, earning below that threshold does not guarantee eligibility for assistance.

Applications consider not only family size but also income sources, specific living expenses, and the applicant’s citizenship or appropriate immigration status.

In addition, certain adults may be subject to additional obligations such as work or vocational training.

With the new regulation, an increase in benefits for a significant portion of current recipients is expected, with the average increase estimated at around $18.

Officials emphasize that the assistance amounts vary by household financial circumstances and that the announced figures represent the maximum amounts that can be received.

The assistance is used in market shopping.

SNAP assistance is provided to beneficiaries through electronic benefit cards called EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer).

Using EBT cards, which work like bank cards, participants can purchase meat, milk, eggs, vegetables, fruit, bread, and other eligible food items from participating supermarkets.

However, alcohol, tobacco products, and many non‑food items cannot be purchased with the assistance. Restrictions on certain items may vary by state.

Applications can be submitted online.

People living in Pennsylvania who wish to benefit from the SNAP program can submit their applications through the state's official COMPASS system.

During the application, information about the household, income status, and other required documents are evaluated. Applicants who are approved are notified of the monthly assistance amount deemed appropriate.

Officials advise those seeking assistance to check the current income thresholds, immigration status requirements, and other eligibility criteria before applying.

In Pennsylvania, applications and detailed information can be accessed at www.dhs.pa.gov/COMPASS.

On the other hand, the SNAP program is not limited to Pennsylvania. The benefit amounts and application requirements of the nationwide program can vary depending on the state of residence and the household’s circumstances.
