Father of 17‑year‑old Turkish youth Yavuz Durmaz, killed in ABD, calls for justice!
Father of Turkish citizen Yavuz Durmaz, who was killed at age 17 in New Jersey, spoke to ABDPost. In the current stage of the case, the grieving father said the defendant admitted guilt and described the latest developments in the 'justice process'.

A new phase has begun in the case of 17‑year‑old Yavuz Durmaz, who lost his life in an armed attack in New Jersey on January 9, 2026. Father Nasuh Durmaz, speaking to Özlem Özgüt Yörekli, the New York correspondent for ABDPost.com, said the defendant had admitted guilt and explained his objections to the court process and the trial method.

He had left the house for an hour that night.
According to father Nasuh Durmaz, Yavuz returned home from work on the day of the incident and asked his mother for a one‑hour leave to meet friends. When he did not return home in the evening, his family tried to reach him. When his brother went to the location where the phone was found, police officers verified Yavuz’s identity by showing his photo and reported that he had died.
According to officials, the incident occurred in the Parlin area of the town of Sayreville. Police said the 17‑year‑old was shot with a weapon and died at the scene. A 16‑year‑old suspect was taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Father Durmaz’s objection to the defendant’s trial process.
Nasuh Durmaz said the defendant, held responsible for his son’s death, was first tried in a juvenile court and later transferred to an adult court. The father, noting that the penalty that could be imposed might still be limited to juvenile sanctions despite the transfer, expressed his objection to the process.

Durmaz explained that after the prosecutor's office presented 10- and 15-year prison terms, a 25-year sentence was being pursued. According to his own words, he had previously been told that a sentence below 30 years would not be considered. The father objected to the penalty discussions he believed were conducted without his consultation.
Defendant Confessed His Crime for the First Time, Father Requested Jury Trial
Responding to Özlem Özgüt Yörekli's questions, Nasuh Durmaz said the defendant had not previously admitted his crime, but had confessed through his lawyers before the last hearing. The father stated that he wanted the case to go before a jury and for all details of the incident to be clarified in court.
Durmaz emphasized that with the admission of the crime, questions about the motive of the incident had not been answered. He expressed that he wanted to know why his son was targeted and whether other people played a role in the event.

Questions About Evidence Collection Are on the Agenda
Father Durmaz said that they also played a role in locating the camera footage related to the incident. He noted that some footage from the family and close relatives had been provided to the police, and he also described difficulties in accessing the investigation file and attending hearings.
Durmaz also contended that the role of another person he believed had accompanied the suspect during the incident had not been sufficiently investigated. He asserted that this individual may have directed the attack and called for the person's responsibility to be clarified.
Suffering Father Nasuh Durmaz: This Sentence Won't Cool My Heart!
Nasuh Durmaz, who recalled that his son was only 17 when he was killed, said that a possible 25‑year sentence does not mean justice had been served for him. The father added that the length of time the suspect would spend in prison and the possibility of future release also worried him.
While voicing his criticisms of the U.S. judicial system, Durmaz also demanded answers to questions about the cause of the incident and the responsible parties, in addition to the loss his family had endured.

Final Hearing Expected in January 2027
During the interview, Nasuh Durmaz said that the case's final hearing is expected to take place in January 2027. He added that assessments of the possible sentence and execution period would depend on the court's ruling.
The grieving father wants all questions regarding his son's death answered and justice served. The final outcome of the case and the sentence to be imposed will be clarified by the court's ruling.
