During a powerful storm and flood affecting New Jersey in the United States, a shark was seen in the waters that covered the streets of Surf City. The footage quickly became trending on social media.
In footage recorded by a citizen in Surf City, a dogfish was seen swimming in flood waters that reached about 1.2 meters.
Dr. Greg Skomal, a researcher from the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries, examined the footage and said the animal was a smooth dogfish that does not pose a threat to humans. It was stated that this species is common in the area.
It was reported that the dogfish swam up to a house's garage lane, then headed toward Barnegat Bay.
It was reported that flood waters rose to about 1.2 meters in some areas.
The storm struck the East Coast.
The shark footage was recorded during a powerful nor'easter that struck the U.S. East Coast.
Due to the storm, wind speeds exceeded 80 kilometres per hour around New York and its surroundings, while winds measured up to about 119 kilometres in Surf City. A large number of flights were cancelled or postponed because of heavy rain and wind.
A 56‑year‑old housing worker who was trapped under a fallen tree in New York on Saturday also lost his life.
