Drug Crisis in ABD Hospital: 4 Patients Received Wrong Medication
In the hospital in Nashville, ABD, 4 patients were given potassium instead of painkillers during surgery. An investigation has been launched regarding the incident.

The medication mix-up that occurred at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, United States caused complications during surgery for four patients. The incident happened during routine joint replacement operations.

Potassium Administered to Four Patients
The hospital error came to light on Friday, August 14. According to information reported by WTVF, four patients undergoing joint replacement surgery were given potassium‑containing doses instead of standard pain‑killing drugs. All of the operations were planned to be performed on an outpatient basis.
How the drugs got mixed remains unclear. Hospital President and Senior Executive Dr. Shubhada Jagasia said the health institution was notified on the day the incident occurred and had reported the matter to state officials. The hospital also launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
Hospital Security Measures Statement
Jagasia said the investigation identified the source of the error and that new corrective security measures had been implemented. However, the hospital manager did not provide details on exactly how the error occurred or which new measures were applied. It was noted that clinical teams had begun to implement strengthened security protocols.
Official Investigation in Tennessee
The Tennessee Investigation Office is also conducting an active review related to the incident. The agency was included in the investigation after the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission informed it about the matter. Hospital management held meetings with the families of the affected patients.
Patient Conditions Not Disclosed
The hospital announced that it will not share special clinical information about the health status of four patients with the public. Consequently, detailed official information regarding the nature of the complications experienced by the patients and their current health conditions was not provided.
Excess Potassium Can Pose a Danger
Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte required for the body's functions. In hospitals, potassium citrate, used in the treatment of kidney stones, and potassium chloride, which can be used to support heart and nervous system functions, are employed. However, high amounts of potassium chloride can create a serious danger; high doses are also used in infusions.
Result of the Investigation Awaited
Following the incident in which four patients received the wrong medication at a hospital in Nashville, both the hospital administration and the Tennessee Investigation Bureau are continuing their investigations. Details about at which stage the drugs were mixed and how the incident occurred are expected to be clarified as a result of the investigation.
