The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh increased security measures following attacks by Iran‑backed Houthi forces in Yemen that targeted civilian airports and critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. The embassy requested that non‑mandatory U.S. government personnel and their families leave Saudi Arabia. In a statement on the decision, it was noted that attacks could spread to new areas and security risks could rise in the short term.

Houthi attacks have heightened concerns in the region.

In a security notice posted by the embassy on the U.S.-based X platform, it was recorded that civilian casualties occurred in the Houthi attacks and serious disruptions to air travel had taken place. It was announced that the departure order would take effect from Friday, 23 October. The U.S. State Department had also announced on 21 October that non‑mandatory personnel and their families in Saudi Arabia would be ordered to leave the country.

Airport restrictions for U.S. personnel

The embassy reported that following the latest missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks, U.S. government employees must obtain special permission from the mission chief to use airports in Saudi Arabia. It was stated that this measure was implemented to ensure the safety of personnel.

Flights are disrupted in Riyadh and other cities

According to the statement, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has resumed limited flights on domestic routes and some international routes. Some flights to Riyadh are instead operating via Prince Naif Airport in El Kasim. Delays and cancellations are also occurring at airports in Jeddah and Dammam.

US citizens urged to check their flights.

The US Embassy in Riyadh urged American citizens to remain vigilant against possible new attacks and the prospect of airspace closures. Passengers were asked to confirm the current status of their flights with the relevant airlines before heading to the airport.
